30 Curly hairstyles for women

Karishma Kapoor’s big hair looks great on her and will work well for women of all frames and sizes making it the perfect curly hairstyle for women. This particular hairstyle will give small framed women a fuller look. Larger framed women will be complemented and balanced by the volume of the hairstyle. Read this post for more on big hair; cleansing, conditioning, drying and styling it.

Karishma has a layered haircut that starts at chin level and goes down till nearly waist-level, but the look will work on any step cut or layered cuts of any length. Her hair has been colored a chestnut brown.

Steps to create this curly hairstyle:

To achieve this look, begin with freshly washed hair. Use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner such as Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Shampoo or Body Shop’s Rainforest Volume Shampoo. For a list of some other volumizing shampoos available in India, look here.

Next, spray on a volumizing spray or rub a volumizing mousse in your hair and roots. Those with fine or oily hair may prefer to use a spray rather than the mousse. You can try Garnier Fructis Style Volumizing Anti- Humidity Spray, L’Oreal Paris Studio Silk & Gloss Volume Spray Extra Volume Hair Styler or L’Oreal Elvive Styliste Mousse Non-Stop Volume Hair Style.

Apply a heat protecting serum or cream before you bring out your curling tools.

Before you begin curling, separate the hair above your ears and tie it up or pin it securely with a jaw clip. Then, take small sections of your hair and twist it around a tong with a medium to large sized curling barrel. Hold for about 5 seconds and release. Hold the curl in your hand a few seconds before letting go. It helps to have a friend with you who will help you find sections of your hair, fan the hot curls and help with the back section of your hair!

After you finish with the lower level, separate a next layer from the bunched up hair. Make sure you leave the hair on your crown out of this section.

Repeat the curling process by curling outwards like with the bottom-most layer.

Once this is done, it’s time to address the crown. The crown literally takes the crown in this hairstyle. Take Make sure you part your hair the way you want it to before you continue. Karishma has her hair parted in the middle but you can choose to try a side parting.

Using a slightly larger barrel for this section, separate hair into length-wise sections. Wrap each section away from the face as done before but try to keep the tong parallel to the length of your own face. Hold the hot barrel in your hair for about 7 seconds. Once you release the curl, use a bobby pin to hold it. This way you’ll have more volume. Once you’ve curled all the way around your head and the curl are still in place secured by bobby pins, use a finishing shine spray to hold the hairstyle.

Unpin the bobby pins and run your fingers through your hair very gently to separate and create some movement. You’re now ready to make heads turn! Honestly, this hairstyle creates a style statement just by itself.

This ombre hair has been curled on multiple levels. Start with the lower layers first and arrange the upper layers carefully so as to not hide the curly layers below. Flaunt.

#6: Messy curly down-do

This down-do is a cool way for girls with curly hair in layers to try something different without trying too hard. Just grab your lower layers and braid them – regularly, French or fishtail – all work well. Forget about doing anything to the top half.

 #7: Princess style

This style calls for a sleek top half and pretty, defined curls at the lower end. Another hairstyle that works well for dyed hair that is growing out or ombre hair.

This lovely hairstyle just needs some curling cream or mousse and a lot of oomph to carry off. Pair with a pair of big hoop earrings or a pancho top. Or both.

Give your curly hair a twist by literally twisting some of it into a band on either side and holding them back up at the back of your head. You can cover the twist with hair from your crown or show it off.

These uniform waves are an alternative way to wearing your curls. Just curl them all the same way and finish with a setting spray.

Most pixie cuts you see are worn on short, straight hair. There’s no rule that says no curls, so go ahead and flaunt them. You can straight iron a section of hair on the sides to enhance the look.

#14: All down hairstyle for natural curly hair

This is another one of those hairstyles that flaunts curly hair beautifully. This natural curly hair looks relaxed and the more importantly, the girl is confident! I find a lot of us Indian girls tend to shy away from flaunting our naturally big and curly hair. There’s no reason not to.

#15: Half up half down mixed with braids

If you want to try out a little hatke hairstyle for curly hair – find someone to help you create cornrows. They can be in a designer mosaic like above or just straight. This hairstyle is a personal favorite when I’m out walking around with jeans or other casual outfits. Just grad half of our hair as you would to make a half ponytail, and using an elastic, pull your hair through but not all the way. Let your bangs frame your face.
